Tips to make your home smokefree
Join hundreds of people who have made the pledge to make their homes smokefree, protecting babies, children and vulnerable adults from the effect of the chemicals found in tobacco smoke.
- Make the decision to take the pledge.
- If you live with other people, talk to them about the importance of protecting the family from second hand smoke - particularly during the winter period when we spend more time inside.
- If it is suitable to go totally smokefree, decide to:
- never smoke in the presence of children
- make the car smokefree
- don't let guests smoke in the house.
Your child depends on you - even for the air that they breathe. When you are protecting them from the harm of smoke, make sure you are not exposing them to other dangers - like fire, electricity and dangerous objects.
If your a smoker, plan times of the day when you will have a cigarette and make sure that someone is around to look after your children. Alternatively
- limit smoking to only one well-ventilated adults room; or
- if you can't leave the house, or the room you share with your children, smoke out of the window.
